With the upcoming release of the SNES Classic Edition, Nintendo fans are getting extremely excited. You can’t blame them, really. The Super Nintendo was, and still is an amazing console.
It’s clear though that come launch day, there’s not going to be enough for everyone. Nintendo, being the clever lot that they are have thought of another way to get some money out of the old system. Release it as a limited edition New 3DS XL variant. Now, it’s the same old New Nintendo 3DS inside, the only difference is the fact that its outer shell is designed like a Super Nintendo. As with the non XL variant, it has the button colour scheme which matches that of the Super Nintendo.
The casing itself matches that seen on the PAL SNES and Super Famicom in Japan, and not the grey and purple version that was released in North America. Personally, I’ve always preferred the PAL version of the NTSC version in terms of aesthetics.
Is it worth it?
If you don’t a New Nintendo 3DS, then yes, this is definitely worth the purchase. Not only does it look amazing, but you’re getting a whole back catalogue of various games. Given that SNES games are appearing on the Virtual Console anyway, it means you can download your old favourites. It should be noted that the SNES VC games cannot run on the original 3DS hardware, only the systems with the ‘New’ moniker.
This really is a great bit of marketing by Nintendo, though. It’s going to have collectors and retro enthusiasts alike chomping at the bit and waiting for release day come the 13th October. So what do you think? Will you be buying this on day one, or is it one variant of the New 3DS that you’ll be leaving on the shelf? It is now available to pre-order on Amazon.
